A Chauffeur's Guide to Getting Around Boston's Neighborhoods
Beacon Hill's one-way maze, Seaport's event traffic, and Back Bay's loading restrictions — where local knowledge saves you twenty minutes.
Boston was not designed for cars, and no amount of navigation software fully compensates for that. These are the patterns that matter when you are being driven.
Beacon Hill
Narrow one-way cobblestone streets with almost no legal standing room. Pickups are smoother from Charles Street or the corner of a cross street rather than directly outside a brownstone.
Back Bay
Newbury and Boylston move slowly through the afternoon. Side-street pickups on Marlborough or Commonwealth typically save five to ten minutes over a main-artery curb.
Seaport
Convention traffic transforms the district without warning. On event days, allow an extra twenty minutes in either direction and expect designated staging away from the venue entrance.
North End
Effectively pedestrian at dinner hours. The practical drop-off is Cross Street or Commercial Street with a short walk in.
Timing rules of thumb
- Cross-town at rush hour: double the off-peak estimate
- Any route through the tunnels on a Friday afternoon: add 25 minutes
- Game days at Fenway or TD Garden: avoid the surrounding grid entirely
